It is our aim to foster a love of books and reading. We encourage our children to read a wide range of materials, with fluency and understanding.
Listed below are the reading schemes the school uses prior to our pupils learning with ‘real reading’ books.

We provide a litary rich environment with easy access to a wide range of fiction and non-fiction books. We have an extensive reference library and in addition have recently developed this into a lending library for our pupils and their families.
We teach the skills of reading through whole class shared reading sessions, small group guided reading sessions and individual reading. We have an extensive range of scheme books and book banded ‘real’ books that allow us to tailor and scaffold children’s reading to their individual requirements. Reading is taught in accordance with the 2014 National Curriculum.
Reading skills and spelling are taught through the delivery of phonics in a systematic way (using Letters and Sounds, Support for Spelling and elements of the Spelling Exemplification Programme as a basis for our teaching.) It is our aim to ensure the children are familiar with the high frequency words, both decodable and non-decodable from the Letters and Sounds Phonics programme.
