Young children are curious and keen to learn therefore science offers them the opportunity to explore and find out about the world around them.

 

At Larkfields our Foundation Stage 2 children take part in science based activities which are planned according to ‘The World’ area of learning within the Foundation Stage Curriculum. Activities are linked to cross curricular topics and their learning is assessed against the Early Learning Goals at the end of FS2.

 

During Key Stage 1 we teach science to cover the appropriate scientific skills and knowledge for Years 1 and 2 as laid down in the National Curriculum. At present our Y2 children are following the content of the previous National Curriculum as required and our Y1 children are following the content of the new 2014 National Curriculum.

 

The children are being taught to use a range of skills to meet the expectations of the Key Stage 1 Programmes of Study. When the 2014 science curriculum is fully implemented the children will carry out work about plants, animals including humans and everyday materials at an appropriate level for the different year groups. In addition to these topics Y1 will cover seasonal change and Y2 living things and their habitats. The science curriculum will be enhanced by science based learning through scientific enquiry methods related to our current half termly topics.

 

Computing

 

The use of Information Technology forms an important part of our work, providing a variety of cross-curricular activities. The children explore ICT and learn to use it confidently and purposefully achieving specific outcomes. They use different software to help them develop ideas and record creative work. All children have supervised access to the Internet to gather information and visit specific web sites. The school has a filtering system for Internet access.

 

Design and Technology

 

Through a variety of creative and practical activities, children are taught the knowledge, understanding and skills needed to engage in the repetitive process of designing and making a variety of products.

 

The children are given the opportunity to learn where different food comes from and they are taught the importance of having a healthy and varied diet. The Kimberley School host a day where they invite the Year 2 children to take part in activities using their specialised rooms and equipment.

 

We value our adult helpers who enrich the Design and Technology curriculum by taking groups of children to do a variety of activities such as baking, sewing, and weaving.
