Why Choose Us?

Why Choose Larkfields Infant School?

A place where children are known, nurtured and encouraged to shine

Choosing your child’s first school is a big decision. At Larkfields Infant School, we believe that education is about so much more than what happens at a desk.

We want every child to feel safe, valued, confident and excited to come to school. We get to know our children as individuals and nurture not only their academic development, but also their confidence, independence, friendships, curiosity and love of learning.

As a small, welcoming infant school, we pride ourselves on creating a strong sense of belonging and community, where children, families and staff know one another and work together.

Our approach is simple:

Achieve • Belong • Confidence

🌱 Learning that happens everywhere

We believe children learn best when they are actively involved, curious and having fun.

Learning doesn't always mean sitting at a table. Our children have opportunities to learn through play, exploration, practical experiences, discussion, creativity and the natural world.

Our school has a range of spaces designed to support different ways of learning, including creative areas, a well-stocked library, outdoor learning spaces and our own school allotment.

We want children to leave us not only knowing more, but wanting to know more.

🥕 Our very own school allotment

One of the things that makes Larkfields special is our school allotment.

Our children can get their hands dirty, plant seeds, care for growing plants and discover where food comes from. They can watch things grow and, when the time comes, pick and enjoy their own fruit and vegetables.

It provides wonderful opportunities to develop:

  • 🌱 Responsibility
  • 🥕 Understanding of healthy food
  • 🌻 Respect for nature
  • 🐝 Knowledge of the environment
  • 🤝 Teamwork
  • 💚 A sense of achievement

Our allotment is not just a garden — it is another classroom.

🏹 Enrichment that inspires children

We want children to discover things they love and develop interests beyond the core curriculum.

Throughout their time at Larkfields, children have opportunities to take part in a range of exciting enrichment experiences, including:

🏹 Archery
🌿 Nature Club
🎵 School Choir
⚽ Sporting activities
🎨 Creative activities
📚 Story and reading experiences
🌱 Outdoor learning

These experiences help children discover new talents, try something they have never done before and build confidence outside the traditional classroom.

🏡 A real community school

We are incredibly proud of our links with the local Nuthall community.

Our relationship with Nuthall Methodist Church is particularly special. Throughout the year, we visit the church for different community occasions, including celebrations such as Harvest Festival and Christmas carol singing.

These experiences help children understand that their school is part of something bigger — their local community.

We want our children to feel that they belong not just to their class, but to Larkfields and the wider Nuthall community.

🐝 Wraparound care from the school

For families who need additional childcare, The Nest provides convenient wraparound care on our school site.

Our breakfast club operates from 7:30am, while our after-school club runs until 6:00pm, helping families manage the school day alongside work and family commitments.

Because The Nest is based at Larkfields, children can enjoy a familiar environment before and after their school day.

One school. One familiar environment. Care before and after the school day.

💚 We genuinely care about your child

Perhaps the most important reason to choose Larkfields is something that is difficult to put into a league table:

We know our children.

Our staff take time to understand each child — their personality, interests, strengths, friendships and individual needs.

This isn't simply something we say. Our website includes parent feedback describing how staff get to know children individually, while another parent describes Larkfields as “family focused.”

We want children to know:

“My teachers know me.”
“My friends are here.”
“I belong here.”
“I feel safe here.”

👫 Friendships that last

The infant years are about much more than learning to read, write and calculate.

They are also about learning to:

  • Make friends
  • Share and cooperate
  • Solve problems
  • Express feelings
  • Be kind
  • Become independent
  • Have confidence in themselves
  • Celebrate the achievements of others

We create opportunities for children to play together, learn together and grow together.

Because some of the most important lessons in childhood happen when children are simply talking, playing, exploring and making memories together.

🌳 A love of the outdoors

Our children benefit from a range of outdoor spaces, including playground areas, extensive playing fields and dedicated outdoor learning areas.

We believe outdoor learning provides children with experiences that cannot always be replicated inside a classroom.

Whether they are planting vegetables, exploring nature, playing a team sport, investigating the world around them or simply enjoying time outdoors, we want our children to develop a lifelong appreciation of the natural world.

📚 A love of reading

Reading is at the heart of life at Larkfields.

We want children to discover that books can take them anywhere — they can make them laugh, help them understand the world, introduce them to new ideas and allow them to imagine endless possibilities.

Our school has a well-stocked library alongside classroom reading opportunities.

We don't just want children who can read.

We want children who love to read.

⭐ A school where children belong

Our last Ofsted inspection highlighted something that we believe captures the heart of Larkfields:

“Pupils have a real sense of belonging at this welcoming infant school. They say that it feels ‘like one big family.’ Pupils feel safe and are happy. They enjoy coming to school.”

That sense of belonging is something we work hard to create every day.

💚 Why Larkfields?

Because childhood should be an adventure.

At Larkfields Infant School, your child will have opportunities to:

🌱 Grow vegetables in our allotment
🏹 Try something new through enrichment activities
🌿 Explore the natural world
🎵 Discover talents through music and sport
📚 Develop a love of reading

👫 Build friendships

We don't just prepare children for the next stage of school.

We help them build the foundations for life.
