Writing skills of transcription and composition are carefully mapped out to ensure progression across our three years groups. Writing is taught daily in units of half terms that build children’s use of vocabulary, sentence construction and spelling in order to apply these skills to longer pieces of work. Teachers will explicitly model the writing process for children and monitor carefully areas the children may need support or extension in. We aim to integrate writing into the wider curriculum and allow children to write for genuine purposes. Children are taught how to draft and edit their writing.
Handwriting is taught at least twice a week and follows a prescribed programme that begins with the development of fine motor skills in the Early Years through to the skills of joining letters together as the children move through Year 2.
